Causes of Sunburn

Sunburn is, in essence, a skin condition that results in red, blotchy and sensitive skin that is tender to the touch wit the damage caused due to over-exposure of UV rays of sun. Sunburn can be mild, moderate or severe depending on the length of sun exposure and the intensity of UV rays; sunburn can be life-threatening if it occurs over an extended period of time and is the primary source of premature aging or even skin cancer.

Types of sunburns and symptoms

There are three types of sunburns: First degree burn, second degree burn and third degree burn of which the first degree burn consists of redness and pain, second degree burn constitutes redness, pain and water bubbles while symptoms in third degree burn cases include all the previously mentioned symptoms along with white patches of skin.

Tips for prevention of sunburn

Skin care experts recommend using protective sunscreen/sun block if intending to step out in the sun at least 20 minutes before. Ensure that the solution has a high SPF level (a minimum SPF of 15). A higher SPF level solution has the advantage of working effectively as a protective layer against the harmful UV rays for a longer time.

If sunburn does occur, it could be because the person has forgotten to reapply the solution after 4 hours in the sun. In such a case, the intake of either aspirin or ibuprofen, as soon as sunburn is noticed, can ease inflammation and control pain.

If the sunburn causes pain, it can be controlled with cool soaks for about 20 minutes and minimum application of heavy ointments, including oil based products, as they block the pores and aggravate skin irritation. These may even lead to infection.

Homegrown wisdom and kitchen remedies for sunburn

Limit exposure to the sun as far as possible and completely abstain from sun exposure if sunburn has occurred, until healing is complete.
